Feng Shui FAQ

What is the Kua number (卦数)? +

The Kua number is a personal number in Eight Mansions (八宅) Feng Shui, calculated from your birth year and gender. It ranges from 1-9 (excluding 5, which uses either 2 or 8). Your Kua number determines whether you are an East Group or West Group person, and identifies your four lucky and four unlucky compass directions.

What are the four auspicious directions? +

The Eight Mansions system defines four positive directions for each Kua number: Sheng Chi (生氣, Vitality) — best for career and wealth; Tian Yi (天醫, Heavenly Doctor) — best for health; Yan Nian (延年, Longevity) — best for relationships; and Fu Wei (伏位, Stable Position) — best for personal development.

How do I apply Feng Shui directions in my home? +

The primary application is orienting your sleeping direction, desk direction, and main door toward your lucky directions. For sleeping, face your Tian Yi (health) direction. For work, face your Sheng Chi (vitality) direction. For your main door, the Sheng Chi or Yan Nian directions are ideal. Even small adjustments — rotating your desk, repositioning your bed — can create meaningful energetic shifts.

Does Feng Shui work for renters who can't renovate? +

Absolutely. Feng Shui is primarily about how you position yourself and your key objects within a space. A renter can: reposition their bed orientation, face their desk in a lucky direction, add element-balancing colors through décor, place plants or water features in appropriate corners, and choose which room to use for which purpose — all without any renovation.

What if my partner has a different Kua number? +

If partners have conflicting Kua groups (East and West), prioritize the main breadwinner's directions for the home, and use the other partner's directions for their specific areas (study room, personal workspace). The wealth corner (Southeast) and relationship corner (Southwest) are universally positive and work for all Kua numbers.
