The Five Elements theory (五行 Wǔxíng) is one of the oldest and most influential frameworks in Chinese philosophy. Dating back to the Warring States period (475–221 BCE), it describes five fundamental energies — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — that govern everything from seasons and organs to personality types and destiny.
Unlike the Western four elements, the Chinese Five Elements are not static substances but dynamic forces in constant interaction. They generate, transform, and control each other in two cyclical patterns: the generating cycle (相生 xiāng shēng) where each element feeds the next, and the controlling cycle (相克 xiāng kè) where each element keeps another in check.
Spring energy. Growth, creativity, vision. The pioneer who plants seeds for the future. Linked to the liver, eyes, and the color green.
Summer energy. Passion, charisma, expression. The performer who lights up every room. Linked to the heart, tongue, and the color red.
Late summer energy. Stability, nourishment, reliability. The steady foundation others build on. Linked to the spleen, mouth, and yellow.
Autumn energy. Precision, discipline, integrity. The refiner who cuts away what doesn't belong. Linked to the lungs, nose, and white.
Winter energy. Wisdom, depth, adaptability. The philosopher who sees what others miss. Linked to the kidneys, ears, and black/blue.
In the traditional BaZi (八字) system, your Five Elements profile comes from your full birth chart — year, month, day, and hour pillars, each containing a Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch. The Year Stem determines your primary element as seen by others (your social face), while the Day Master (日主) — the Heavenly Stem of your birth day — reveals your true core element.
This calculator uses your birth year's Heavenly Stem to identify your primary element — a simplified entry point into the system. For your complete profile, try our full BaZi Calculator.
Feng shui uses the Five Elements to balance the energy in your living spaces. Knowing your dominant element helps you choose the right colors, shapes, and materials for your home:
Thrive with plants, green tones, tall furniture, and wooden textures.
Benefit from reds, triangular shapes, candles, and good lighting.
Need square shapes, terracotta, ceramic objects, and earth tones.
Prefer whites, round shapes, metallic accents, and minimal decor.
Flourish with dark blues, flowing shapes, water features, and mirrors.
Generating cycle (相生): Wood feeds Fire → Fire creates Earth (ash) → Earth yields Metal → Metal collects Water → Water nourishes Wood. In relationships and career, connecting with your "parent" element (the one that generates you) brings support and resources.
Controlling cycle (相克): Wood parts Earth → Earth dams Water → Water extinguishes Fire → Fire melts Metal → Metal chops Wood. These controlling relationships create tension but also discipline. In the right proportion, control brings structure; in excess, it brings conflict.
