BaZi (八字) — also called the Four Pillars of Destiny — is a Chinese metaphysical system that maps your exact birth date and time onto a structured chart of four pillars. Each pillar has two characters: a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. Four pillars, two characters each — eight characters total. Hence: 八字.
The system is built on a 60-year cycle of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, which encodes the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and Yin/Yang polarity. In traditional BaZi interpretation, these elements describe the energetic balance of your chart — where you have abundance, where you have lack, and how different life forces interact.
BaZi is considered the most comprehensive system in classical Chinese astrology. Unlike the Chinese zodiac, which uses only your birth year, BaZi incorporates your birth month, day, and hour — producing a chart that is individually specific. Two people born in the same year will have very different BaZi charts if they were born on different days or at different hours.
The System
Year, Month, Day, and Hour are each expressed as a pair of Chinese characters — a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch — using a precise calendar system based on solar terms.
There are 10 Heavenly Stems (天干), each associated with one of the Five Elements and either Yin or Yang polarity. They form a 10-character cycle: 甲乙 (Wood), 丙丁 (Fire), 戊己 (Earth), 庚辛 (Metal), 壬癸 (Water).
There are 12 Earthly Branches (地支), each corresponding to one of the 12 zodiac animals and a primary element. They form a 12-character cycle. The Year Branch gives you your Chinese zodiac animal sign.
The Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar is your Day Master (日主) — the reference point for the entire chart. In traditional BaZi interpretation, every other element is analyzed in relationship to your Day Master.
The elements across all four pillars are tallied to find your chart's dominant and missing elements. Traditional BaZi interpretation uses this distribution — along with elemental relationships (generating and controlling cycles) — to identify favorable and challenging energies.
The Ten Gods (十神) classify how each Stem in the chart relates to the Day Master. They traditionally describe wealth type, relationship style, authority dynamic, and creative expression. This calculator shows the Ten Gods for the Year, Month, and Hour Stems.
Precision
Each pillar in your BaZi chart is traditionally associated with a different phase of life and a different domain. Birth time determines the Hour Pillar, which affects not only that pillar's characters but also the overall elemental balance of your entire chart.

Common Questions
BaZi (八字) literally means "eight characters." The name refers to the eight Chinese characters that make up your destiny chart — two characters (a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch) for each of the four pillars: Year, Month, Day, and Hour.
The Four Pillars are the Year Pillar, Month Pillar, Day Pillar, and Hour Pillar. Each represents a different dimension of your life and a different phase of time. Together, they form your complete BaZi chart — a traditional Chinese map of the elemental energies present at your moment of birth.
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. In traditional BaZi interpretation, it represents the self — your core elemental nature. Every other element in your chart is analyzed in relationship to your Day Master. Knowing your Day Master element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water) and its polarity (Yin or Yang) is the starting point for reading any BaZi chart.
Your birth time determines the Hour Pillar, which traditionally relates to children, legacy, later-life fortune, and your innermost aspirations. It also affects the overall elemental balance of your entire chart. Without an accurate birth time, the Hour Pillar and the complete element distribution cannot be reliably calculated.
Traditional BaZi calculations commonly use Li Chun (立春), the Beginning of Spring, as the year boundary — not the Lunar New Year. Li Chun falls around February 4th each year. This matters most for people born in late January or early February: their year pillar may differ depending on which boundary is used. This calculator uses Li Chun as the year boundary, following the traditional approach.
Yes. The Year, Month, and Day Pillars can be calculated from your birth date alone. The Hour Pillar requires a birth time. If your birth time is unknown, the calculator will note this, and the Hour Pillar result should be treated as approximate. Most of the chart — including your Day Master and the majority of the elemental balance — can still be meaningfully explored.
The Chinese zodiac (12 animals) is based solely on your birth year, using only the Earthly Branch of the Year Pillar. BaZi uses all four pillars and both the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of each — producing far greater individual specificity. Two people born in the same year will have completely different BaZi charts if born on different days or at different times of day.
