The Meaning of 八字 (BāZì)

The word BaZi (八字) literally means "eight characters." These eight characters — four Heavenly Stems and four Earthly Branches — form your destiny chart, derived from the year, month, day, and hour of your birth. Each pair of characters forms one "pillar," giving the system its other name: Four Pillars of Destiny (四柱命理).

Unlike Western astrology which focuses primarily on the sun sign, BaZi treats your birth moment as a multi-dimensional snapshot of the cosmic energy present when you arrived — and interprets how that energy will interact with the world throughout your life.

The Four Pillars

Each pillar represents a dimension of your life and identity:

• Year Pillar: Your public face, childhood environment, ancestral influences
• Month Pillar: Career drive, relationship with parents, prime adult years
• Day Pillar: Your true inner self — the Day Master (日主) is the most important character in your chart
• Hour Pillar: Your children, hidden talents, inner thoughts and ambitions

What Is the Day Master?

The Day Master (日主 Rì Zhǔ) is the Heavenly Stem of your birth day, and it is the single most important element in your BaZi chart. It represents your core identity — your fundamental energy and how you process the world.

There are 10 possible Day Masters, corresponding to the 10 Heavenly Stems, each associated with one of the Five Elements in its Yin or Yang form:

Each pillar consists of two parts: a Heavenly Stem (天干 Tiāngān) on top and an Earthly Branch (地支 Dìzhī) below.

Ten Gods — How Elements Interact

The relationship between your Day Master element and each other element in your chart creates the Ten Gods (十神 Shí Shén) — a set of archetypes that describe different life forces:

• Wealth Star (财星): What your Day Master controls — represents income, spouse (for men), desire
• Officer Star (官星): What controls your Day Master — represents career authority, discipline, spouse (for women)
• Resource Star (印星): What generates your Day Master — support, education, mother figure
• Output Star (食伤): What your Day Master generates — creativity, expression, children
• Friend Stars (比劫): Same element as Day Master — peers, siblings, competition

BaZi practitioners use the chart to understand:
