Origin: Warring States
Zhao Kuo was the son of General Zhao She, one of the greatest military minds of the Zhao state. From childhood, Zhao Kuo devoured every book on strategy and could recite the classics backwards and forwards. He would argue with generals, quote battle formations, and explain exactly how wars should be won. His father, however, remained unimpressed, saying, 'Kuo only sees the chessboard, not the blood on the ground.' When the powerful Qin army attacked, King Zhao replaced the cautious Lian Po with the confident Zhao Kuo. Full of theoretical brilliance and total self-belief, Zhao Kuo discarded Lian Po's defensive plan and attacked immediately. The result was a catastrophic defeat. Zhao's entire army, perhaps 400,000 men, was trapped and butchered. Zhao Kuo himself was killed by arrows, and the state of Zhao never recovered. Young geniuses often mistake diagrams for reality. Zhao Kuo had memorized the battlefield, but the battlefield had never read the book.

Lin Xiangru had gone from obscurity to the highest ranks after successfully returning the He Shi Bi jade to Zhao and proving his bravery at court. Lin is just a tongue-wagger!' He swore to humiliate Lin whenever he saw him. Lin Xiangru heard every insult but simply ordered his servants to avoid Lian Po on the road. His retainers were ashamed. Lin explained: 'We both serve Zhao. If we fight, the Qin wolves will feast. It is not cowardice. It is putting the kingdom above my pride.' When Lian Po learned the truth, his face burned with shame. He stripped to the waist, strapped a bundle of thorny brambles to his bare back, and walked to Lin Xiangru's door. He kneeled and said, 'I am an arrogant brute. Beat me with these thorns if you want, but accept my apology.' Lin lifted him up, wiped his tears, and took his hand. From that day, they became friends loyal to the same cause.
