The Chinese almanac (老黄历, lǎo huánglì) is a traditional calendar guide that has been used for over 2,000 years to determine auspicious and inauspicious days for important life events. It combines the 12 Day Officers cycle, solar terms, lunar calendar analysis, and GanZhi interactions to produce daily guidance. Traditionally, Chinese families would consult the almanac before weddings, moving house, business openings, and major medical procedures.

The 12 Day Officers cycle through every day, each governing a specific type of energy. The most auspicious are 成 (Chéng / Succeed) and 开 (Kāi / Open) — excellent for almost any major event. The most inauspicious are 破 (Pò / Break) and 危 (Wēi / Danger) — best avoided for important occasions. Our calculator assigns each day its officer based on the lunar month and GanZhi cycle.

Our system implements the core traditional algorithm: the 12 Day Officers cycle with month-based starting offsets, plus lunar day patterns that have been used in Chinese almanacs for centuries. This is the same foundational methodology used in traditional 老黄历 calendars. Note that full professional almanac consultation involves additional factors (specific GanZhi clashes, personal birth chart analysis, etc.) — our tool provides culturally accurate general guidance.
