无信则不立

Wú xìn zé bù lì
Without trust, one cannot stand.

No trust, then not stand.

A person cannot achieve lasting success or maintain relationships without credibility and trustworthiness. Integrity is the foundation of one's standing in society.

This saying is derived from Confucian ethics, where trust (信) is one of the five cardinal virtues. It is deeply embedded in Chinese social and business ethics.

Someone might say this when advising a young person to keep promises, or when criticizing a business partner who broke a verbal agreement.

Chinese people use this to reinforce the importance of keeping one's word—especially in a culture where guanxi (relationships) rely heavily on mutual trust. It signals that reputation and reliability are more valuable than short-term gains.
