Ancient Story
Erlang Shen — Yang Jian — is one of the great warrior-gods of Chinese mythology: nephew of the Jade Emperor, wielder of the three-pointed double-edged spear, accompanied by the Howling Celestial Dog. He is the god who defeated the Monkey King, who triumphed in battles that other gods could not win. But his most remarkable quality is this: he always chose his battles according to what was right, not what was commanded. He refused unreasonable orders even from heaven itself.
Yang Jian represents the combination of great power and personal integrity — the understanding that strength is worth little if it is not guided by conscience. In Chinese mythology, those with the most power are tested hardest by what they choose to do with it.
Having the power to do something is not the same as having the reason. Choose your battles with care. They say more about you than your wins do.
