Rain falls on the lotus and runs off, leaving it clean. The Chinese observed this for centuries and saw in it a quality worth cultivating: the ability to let what falls on you pass through without leaving a permanent mark. 出淤泥而不染 — emerging from mud without stain — is the classical phrase. Rain is the easier test.

What falls on you does not have to stay on you. The lotus sheds it. So can you.

Let it rain. You are still here. And still clean.
